What does the Holy Quran say about Traveling

The Holy Quran, the sacred scripture, is a book of wisdom that teaches humanity the purpose of life and guides Muslims on the right way to live.

The Islamic Holy Book covers all aspects of life and directs Muslims to success in this world and the hereafter. According to the Quran, this world is temporary, and human beings are in a constant state of Travel. However, Allah (SWT) also mentions physical traveling several times.

In the Quran, ‘sayyir’ refers to the one who travels. The word sayir literally means to move or travel. Allah (SWT) used this word 27 times in the Quran in several expressions, including “Do Travel,” “Do they not Travel,” and “Tell them to Travel.”

Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear? 22:46

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) also emphasised the importance of travel. He told the believers that traveling is a great way to expand their horizons and seek knowledge. In one instance, he said

“Keep traveling by night because the earth is folded (traversed more easily) during the night.” [Abu Dawud].

Many Islamic travel agencies in the USA offer family Umrah packages that include accommodation, meals, and transportation.

Is a Traveler’s Dua Accepted

In another instance, the Prophet Mohammed PBUH says three Duas for traveling;

“The supplications are answered without a doubt: the duas of the oppressed, the Traveler, and the parents of their children.

Why is Dua Important for Traveling?

The Prophet Mohammed PBUH spoke about offering Duas and traveling supplications multiple times.

Allah SWT will not reject three prayers: this supplication for parents for their child, this supplication of the one who is fasting, and this supplication of the traveler.”

Duas before traveling

In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no power or strength except with Allah.

Dua When Starting a Journey

When the  Messenger of Allah, PBUH, would mount his camel for travel, he would exalt Allah three times and say the following Dua:

Allah is Supreme; Allah is Supreme; Allah is Supremest. The Creator of creation has provided us [with] a mode of travel that we would have never had the capability to do for the journey to Him and for that reason He provided us [with] this (road) to Him. O my God, as we travel to You, grant us Birr (piety) and Taqwa (the doing of good deeds), and we request that You allow us to do deeds that are pleasing to You, O Allah. O Allah, make our journey easy upon us, and allow the distance to be shortened. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor over the family. O Allah, I take refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of hearts and being in a bad predicament, and I take refuge in You from an ill-fated outcome with wealth and family.

Dua When Entering the Mode of Transport

Whether you are traveling by air, land or even sea, the following Dua can be recited when mounting the mode of transport you will be using:

“Glory unto Him who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return.

For Safe Traveling

“O Allah, make our journey and shorten its distance. O Allah, you are the companion on the journey and the guardian of the family. Oh Allah, I seek refuge in You from the difficulties of travel, unpleasant sights, and changes in fortune,  in wealth and family.

When looking at the Town you wish to enter

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelop, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask you for the goodness of this village, the evil of its inhabitants and from all the evil found within it.

Sending you umrah greetings filled with love, peace, and happiness.

Dua after Traveling

The Prophet Mohammed PBUH recited this Dua when returning from travels:

Returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

“In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord, we rely.
